An army of the undead is gathering outside the town of Boonesville. Thanks to a special medallion left to him by his father, sixteen-year-old Kyle McGerrt is the only one who stands a chance against Bart Shires and his ghoulish soldiers. But following in his father’s footsteps won’t be easy.

“Charles Day brings a wicked sense of fun and a real talent for wild horror-fantasy adventure. Weird, crazy and totally enjoyable!” ~Jonathan Maberry, New York Times Bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and Fire & Ash

"Day adds to the Weird Western genre, a funny, tense, surprisingly philosophical, and first-page-to-last fun, the likes of which we haven't seen since Joe Lansdale took us back to the early days of Mud Creek.” ~ Bram Stoker Award-Winner Gary A. Braunbeck, To Each Their Darkness and A Cracked and Broken Path

“Charles Day has established himself as a maestro of the weird western. He's serving up the chills in this one, folks. If you're not scared by Charles Day's ghouls, you're made of sterner stuff than I.” ~Joe McKinney, author of Inheritance and The Savage Dead

"In The Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, Charles Day melds fantasy, horror, and the Old West into a macabre tale of justice, murder, retribution, and redemption. Young Adults of all ages should enjoy this very different coming-of-age tale." Patrick Freivald"Author of Twice Shy and Special Dead"

“A rip-roaring weird western populated with fascinating characters, unique creatures, and a wonderful mash-up of genres. A fast-paced read sure to please young adult readers. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy and the further adventures of Kyle McGertt.” --Taylor Grant, Award-Winning Writer, Filmmaker

"Unless I'm dreaming, a city guy from Long Island has just delivered an authentic vision of the Old West. Only in Charles Day's West, the ghouls are lurking. I could smell the gunpowder and saddle leather just as easily as I could scream in fright. THE GHOULISH BARTENDER is now on duty, and his customers are running up tabs of terror." Eric Shapiro, author of THE DEVOTED and STORIES FOR THE END OF THE WORLD

"In THE HUNT FOR THE GHOULISH BARTENDER, the first book in a new YA series chronicling the adventures of Kyle McGertt, Charles Day has written a wonderfully strange western novel, complete with dark mysticism and six-shooters and an overwhelming sense of peril. No doubt fans will be waiting anxiously for the next book in the series." ~ Aric Sundquist, author of THE END OF AUTUMN

"Young Kyle McGertt hunts the supernatural with the aid of visions from his father's magical medallion, and charismatic Bart Shires is next on the list. Will Kyle capture this diabolical fugitive, or will he fall prey to the ghoulish bartender? Charles Day takes his readers for a thrill ride with this exciting Western tale of horror and magic." ~Chantal Noordeloos, Author of the forthcoming, COYOTE, THE OUTLANDER.

"New territory has been paved within the YA genre, and it's purveyor is Charles Day. Though a relatively short novel, THE HUNT FOR THE GHOULISH BARTENDER is jam-packed with pillage, guns, a wayward saloon, classic heroes, and a bit of blood. I'm witnessing first hand the evolution of Charles Day's writing, and it's wonderful." --J. Daniel Stone, author of THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT

Remember the days when you were a child, and you played Cowboys and Indians? Those were summers were always worry free and never ending for me. They were times that my imagination could pour from my soul and new realities were created for a couple of hours. Sometimes I long for those days again.

Last night I finished reading The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt: Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, and once again, I relived those youthful days of retreating into my imagination and becoming a hero that the world needed. However, this book gave my reminiscence something that is was always lacking, something that I could not pinpoint. This experience gave us the Ghoulish Bartender. Cowboys and Indians was always fun to play, but Cowboys and Ghouls would have been much more intriguing as a child.

I found The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt: Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender to be an amazing read, that was very hard to put down. From the front, to the back, the action is non-stop and the characters come alive (Although some are only half alive) in every paragraph. Charles Day really put his heart and soul into this book, and it is seen on every page.

I am anxiously awaiting to see what happens in the second book of the trilogy, and am secretly hoping that the Ghoulish Bartender makes a miraculous appearance either there, or in book three. There is something "loveable" about that large and scary man, I just cannot out my finger on it. If he doesn't appear in the next books, I hope to see his further adventures in the upcoming comic books.

Whether you are a fan of the old west, or not, this book will keep you intrigued from page to page, anticipating where the action will take you next. It is a fantastic read for young and old, and everyone in between. In fact, regardless of your age, you will feel young again as you relive your childhood adventures, with a twist. Hell, I might make a run to the toy store to purchase a cowboy hat and plastic pistol/holster and wear it while reading the next book when it releases.

The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt Hunt for The Ghoulish Bartender Charles Day 9780984978298 Books Reviews

The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, is a great read for any age. Full of supernatural western action from page one this book does not fail to entertain. The best part about the story of cruse bounty hunter Kyle McGerrt is that it has something for everyone. Including a really neat villian in the Ghoulish Bartender, Bart. I give it five stars and highly recommend this very creative, well written tale.
Charles Day's second YA novel, The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, is a well-written, thrill-a-minute horror western yarn. Day does a marvelous job telling the story of Kyle McGerrt, who is tasked with ridding the wild west of evil monsters. You will have a ghoulish time reading this book! I can't wait for the sequel!
This book by Charles Day comes out swinging and never slows down. His ability to set a scene is unmatched and his characters jump off the page. I'm looking forward to see where The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt take him next. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and highly recommend it. 5 Stars!!
Charles Day's Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender is a gritty and suspenseful read filled with heart. The characterization is great and Charles' ability to give us back story so smoothly while still keeping up the pace is astonishing. Great 'good guys' and 'evil guys'. And he touches nicely on the idea that even the worst people often don't think of themselves as 'the bad-guy' in their life and can rationalize the most awful things. I'm very much looking forward to where Charles takes us from here. If you're a weird western - Joe Lansdale fan, you'll love this one.

I the Hunt for the Ghoulish Bartender, we are introduced to Kyle McGerrt a 16 year old 'demon' hunter. Kyle inherits a medallion from his father after his death at the hands of the evil Bart and his gang. The story follows a maturing young man as he deals with evil, saves the life a little girl, and learns how to handle himself in difficult situations. There are a lot of good lessons to be learned in this book regarding avoiding temptation and evil and doing the right thing all the time. I eagerly await the next book in the series. The Adventures of Kyle McGerrt Hunt for The Ghoulish Bartender
I enjoyed this book. It was a quick, fun read. The pacing was good and the action sequences were quite tense. I particularly liked the character of the ghoulish bartender. I thought he was very well rounded and quite complex for a villain - which I liked. I would like to read more about him. I was a little disappointed in the hero, Kyle McGerrt. I didn't get a feel for him as a character and he seemed to be, at 16, a much more skilled, experienced and accomplished tracker and fighter than his father, who was supposed to be the best. In the sequels it would be nice to develop a more personal connection with Kyle and to see him as a more rounded character than merely the heroic gunslinger who turns up and saves the day. There were also some things that kept pulling me out of the book - Kyle hits his horse with his stirrups to make it go faster, he slows his horse to a slow gallop to get a better view of a place he's riding up to, he tells another character to stay by his horse and then leaves her beside a tree and rides off. They were only little things, but they brought me out of the world of the story that was otherwise exciting and fun.
